Brazing

Brazing forms one of the most important disciplines within the production processes of Van West Koeltechniek. Dozens of connections are made every day in our coolers that form the basis for the reliability, safety and service life of each system. Because we produce fully customized cooling systems for clients throughout the Netherlands and Europe, every joint must be perfect. After all, brazing is never just a technical operation; it is craftsmanship that directly determines whether a cooler will continue to function without problems for many years.

With each cooler, our technicians perform an average of between eight and ten brazing joints. These connections are made with extreme care, involving not only the right temperature and materials, but also insight, experience and precision. It is this combination of technology and craftsmanship that sets us apart. Customers trust our cooling solutions because they know that each joint is made with the same attention as the complete system.

What exactly is brazing?

Brazing is a technique in which two metals are joined by a brazing material with a melting temperature above 450°C (450°F). Unlike welding, the base material remains intact. This makes brazing ideal for thin-walled copper pipes and for components that require accuracy as well as cleanliness. In refrigeration technology, this method is almost indispensable. After all, cooling systems work under high pressure, must be completely leak-tight and must not have any irregularities in the pipe run that affect the flow.

Within Van West Refrigeration, we apply brazing to copper, brass and steel. The resulting joint is strong, durable and resistant to vibration. Especially in R290 refrigeration systems, where pressure resistance and safety play a crucial role, brazing proves its value. Each joint contributes to a reliable system that delivers years of high performance.

Why brazing is so important within our coolers

Within industrial refrigeration, the quality of the connection equals the reliability of the entire system. A chiller can be designed as well as it is, but if the connections are not done properly, sooner or later it will lead to inefficiency or downtime. This is why we pay so much attention to brazing.

In addition, proper brazing provides a connection that is completely leak-proof. This makes the system not only more reliable, but also safer. This is especially important when using natural refrigerants such as R290. The combination of high pressure, compact systems and low margins for error requires a joining method that is more than “sufficient. Brazing is exactly that method.

The durability of these joints is another major advantage. Vibration, heat differences and continuous loading can expose weak spots in the long run. By brazing with silver-based solder and working strictly according to our procedures, our coolers will withstand intensive and long-term use.

The craftsmanship behind our brazing technology

At Van West Refrigeration, we value the fact that brazing is a craft. Our technicians are trained in-house and have years of experience working with limited space, complex piping routes and temperature-critical parts. Brazing requires feeling: perfectly correct heating, a stable flame and the patience to wait for the moment when the brazing material flows naturally into the capillary space.

Our fitters work according to set steps and strict quality controls. Piping is cleaned in advance, deburred and delivered exactly to size. This is followed by a precise fit of the pipe pieces. If the positioning is correct, the metal is heated evenly. During this process, the temperature must be perfectly distributed; heating too fast or too hot can weaken material or cause distortion. The silver-based solder is then applied, after which the joint cools naturally. This prevents stress formation and ensures an extremely stable and strong joint.

During assembly, the connections are visually checked and later tested again during pressurization of the system. Only when every connection is perfect is the cooler released for further assembly.

Applications of brazing within our production

Within Van West Refrigeration, brazing is used in multiple sub-processes. It forms an essential part of the construction of compact R290 coolers, where piping runs often need to be short, efficient and precise. Brazing also recurs continuously during the assembly of piping and the mounting of cooling coils.

In compressor groups, heat exchangers and pipe connections play an important role. Because these components are intensively loaded, a high-quality connection is necessary. In addition, brazing is used for maintenance and leak repair, where the importance of a reliable seal is even greater.

Because we perform all soldering in-house, we maintain full control over quality and delivery time. For customers, this means they can count on a consistent end result and a cooling system that fully fits their machine, without compromising on safety or reliability.

Why companies choose Van West Refrigeration

Our strength lies in customization, reliability and a high level of craftsmanship. Because we produce everything in-house, from piping to complete chillers, we can move quickly and tailor systems completely to our customers’ requirements. Every component, from the smallest pipe to the complete chiller unit, must be practical, safe and efficient.

In doing so, we work in full compliance with current ISO guidelines and F-gases legislation. For our customers, this means that they can count on cooling solutions that meet the highest quality and safety standards. In sectors where downtime is costly, think of coffee machines, soft drink machines or ice baths, this is essential.

Our compact refrigeration systems are known for their reliability and long service life. This is not only because of the design, but mainly because of the way we build. Each brazing contributes to a cooler that ultimately fits perfectly into our customer’s machine.
